We are obsessed with function. Doing things. Doing them well, best, perfectly. Winning at what we do.
Our world would be very different if we were obsessed with experience instead. Experience is much more inclusive than function. Anyone can experience anything, through function, presence or imagination.
Research shows our brains don't know the difference, whether we do something, remember doing it, or imagine doing it.
Experience obsession could increase diversity and decrease bullying in schools. Being there would be more important than doing work and kids would feel less need to do things to others to make them feel better.
Experience obsession could make people think twice about doing therapy for years and endlessly re-playing negative events in their lives. Why retraumatise yourself?
Experience obsession could lessen the importance of traditions and ceremonies — we could still do them but it wouldn't matter if we didn't.
Next time you miss out on doing something or think you can't do it, remember or imagine doing it. The experience will be the same.
